Student Experience Survey

The Student Experience Survey (SES) is a national survey of commencing and completing undergraduate students, who study at Australian campus locations. This survey aims to gain an understanding of the experience that students have at each institution. The survey was first piloted in 2011 with results used by both universities and government to improve teaching and learning in Australia. In 2015, SES was renamed from the University Experience Survey (UES) and forms part of the Federal Government's Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) initiative.

  • From 2017 onshore postgraduate coursework students were also surveyed (nationally).
  • From 2018, onshore undergraduate and postgraduate coursework middle year students and offshore students (all years) were also surveyed (Curtin only).

How to complete the survey

The SES runs in August each year. QILT has engaged the Social Research Centre (SRC) to work with institutions to administer the SES. SRC will send direct emails regularly to eligible students during the campaign period.

SES Promotional Materials

All participating Universities will be covered under one prize pool for the SES which is comprised of four weekly prize pools totalling $8,000. Each weekly prize pool is made up of three $1,000, five $500 and ten $250 prepaid VISA gift cards. The earlier you complete the survey the more chances you have of winning. For example, students who complete their survey in the first week of August will be entered into prize draws #1 to #4 and will be eligible to win a prize in each draw. All conduct related to the prize draw including permits, drawing of prizes, contacting winners and advertising of winners will be carried out by the Social Research Centre. The terms and conditions of the prize draw is available from

All Curtin students (including those who study outside of Australia) who complete the survey will be entered into the national prize draw. Curtin campuses may also offer their students additional prizes for survey completion, look out for details in your local communications.

What is gathered via the Student Experience Survey?

Scales - the Student Experience Survey asks students about five different aspects of the student experience. These aspects are referred to as scales or focus areas. The scales are Overall Education Experience, Skill Development, Learner Engagement, Teaching Quality, Student Support, and Learning Resources.

Items - the items are the questions which make up each of the scales. For example, there are seven questions which make up the Learner Engagement scale. It should be noted that Overall Education Experience is an exception in that it is a scale and it is also an item/question from the Teaching Quality set of questions.

Other - refer to the questionnaire which can be downloaded via the MIR reports download page to see the full questionnaire.
